When Dr. Amber Brooks, DC, CACCP began in practice she saw a huge abundance of children having issues with reflux and colic. They were unable to hold down their food, in turn not gaining weight. It is common for infants at 3 weeks to be prescribed reflux medications and given a diagnosis of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). The previous generation called this “colic” and there was nothing that could be done to help them, now we have a pill to give worried parents to make them feel better along with a diagnosis of GERD. In fact a very small number, less than 10% actually have reflux when swallow studies are performed. GERD is one of the most common diagnoses given to newborns. As a parent you want answers and understandably so, but the diagnosis of “reflux” may not be the right answer for every family. Parents usually see the first signs of reflux and possibly colic at 3-6 weeks, this is when things may get unbearable for new parents. Many of these cases are due to improper birth position in-utero, birth trauma, multiples or diet related. Chiropractic care, craniosacral therapy, supplements and diet changes can make improvements in these cases.
Reflux is a sign of discomfort, consider the following:
- Gentle Chiropractic adjustments
- Craniosacral therapy
- Diet changes
Got Reflux? Not Likely
Chiropractic treatment can take from 4 weeks to several months depending on age, complexity and any underlying issues. Improvement can be seen when recommended treatment plan is followed. If your child is struggling with reflux we may be able to help or make a proper referral.
